A four-segment-mode model predictive control (MPC) for surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) drives is proposed in this article. In order to reduce the switching frequency of the switching tubes and achieve a fixed switching frequency at the same time, a zero voltage vector (VV) redistribution strategy is proposed. In this strategy, the zero VV $u_{0}$ and $u_{7}$ alternate at the beginning and end of each period, and this zero VV at the end of the present control period is the same as the zero VV at the beginning of the next control period without switching action. On this basis, due to action sequence optimization of nonzero VV, the average switching frequency is reduced to half of the control frequency. In addition, the operating time of two zero VVs ( $u_{0}$ and $u_{7}$ ) is optimally allocated to ameliorate the steady-state performance results based on the principle of minimizing the current ripple. Finally, the experimental results show that the four-segment-mode method can obtain good performance at a low fixed switching frequency.
