A vessel traffic system (VTS) is a marine traffic monitoring and controlling system of the movement of vessels on the port water areas. Coastal radar stations are the basic elements of these system to detection and tracking the vessels. However, in the ports of the dense structure and the relatively small size of water areas elements, the use of radar observation causes limitations to achieved of these aims. The paper presents an analysis of the problems connected with radar traffic control on the port water areas. The criteria for the evaluation of radar stations in aspect of the optimal radar station location to obtain for information about vessel traffic.
