Aiming at the severe demand of shaft - less rim - driven thruster (RDT) for water - lubricated thrust bearing in heavy load, off-design condition, low vibration and noise, the effect of elastic support on improving the lubrication performance of tilting pad thrust bearing is proposed. Three kinds of rubber supported water-lubricated tilting pad thrust bearings, such as unequal thickness rubber support (URS), step rubber support (SRS), double rubber support (DRS), are designed. The fluid - structure two - way coupling simulation technique based on finite element method is studied. The influence of thickness and elastic modulus of rubber substrate on bearing performance parameters is analyzed. The results show that the easier the structural form of the rubber pad to tilt, the larger the bearing capacity, the tilt angle, the water film thickness and the maximum rubber pad stress are, and the pressure center shifts toward the water film outlet. According to the design requirements, the values of bearing capacity, minimum water film thickness and average water film thickness are mainly considered, while DRS thrust bearing has no outstanding advantages. Between URS thrust bearing and SRS thrust bearing, the minimum water film thickness and average water film thickness of URS thrust bearing are slightly larger under the similar bearing capacity, and the maximum water film pressure and the maximum rubber pad stress are slightly smaller. And there is no problem of stress concentration at the step in URS. When hi/ho is 7/3, URS thrust bearing is determined as the best scheme and its comprehensive performance is the best.
