Multi-functional grid-connected inverters (MFGCI) play an important role in vehicle-to-grid (V2G) applications. They serve as a power electronics interface between the power grid and batteries of plug-in electric vehicles (PEV) to provide benefits such as ancillary service and spinning reserve. In this paper, a new configuration of MFGCI is proposed for voltage regulation in V2G application. By implementing additional switches, MFGCI can be connected in series or parallel to the grid thus providing three operation modes depending on the battery capacities of PEV and MFGCI, and grid condition. This paper presents new topology, different operation modes, an analysis on the capacity of batteries of PEV and grid condition, design, compensation strategy, and control scheme of proposed MFGCI in V2G application to mitigate unbalanced voltage sag and swell problems.
