Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) are the future networks of mobile ad-hoc networks. They provide communication between Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I), and Vehicle to other entities (V2X). It creates a network infrastructure for the vehicles on roads or highways to share the information among the vehicles and other entities. The information may be related to safety transportation, traffic, alert messages and user related information. To provide the seamless communication services, VANETs pose many issues such as mobility, prediction of abnormal situations, routing, scalability, privacy issues, location dependency, network density, power constraints and information access. Among these issues routing plays a significant role in the VANET communication for quick response time. The routing provides effective communication between the vehicles and other entities. Authors of this article aim to provide survey on highway routing protocols used in urban area VANETs. Comparative study is conducted to explore the features of routing protocols like Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR), Dynamic Source Routing (DSR), Ad-hoc On Demand Distance Vector (AODV), and Destination Sequence Distance Vector (DSDV). The experimental results show AODV is better than others. The protocols are analysed using performance parameters like throughput, delay, packet delivery ratio (PDR) and network overhead.
