The broad area laser diodes are damaged by the optical feedback. The collision and constructive interference between the internal optical field and that of feedback make an instantaneous hot spot at the front facet and causes the degradation and COMD. The catastrophic optical mirror damage limit of the laser is drastically reduced by the optical feedback.
