Increase in renewable penetration and losses in power electronic converters demands the development of DC distribution system. However, lack of zero crossing in current during faults limits the application of conventional fault detection schemes in DC grids. Further, filter capacitor discharge current in converter-based DC supply, asks for a faster fault detection scheme. In this work, a fault detection scheme is proposed using changes in Teager energy of voltage and current of the line to enhance the relay performance during high resistance faults, different loading conditions, and capacitor discharge period. Results obtained from the simulation of photo voltaic based DC distribution system in MATLAB/SIMULINK reveal that the proposed method is faster and secured for pole-pole, pole-ground fault, and various load changes.
