The main goal of this paper is to formulate, design, as well as test algorithms that will increase the efficiency of large civil airplanes flying long-distance routes. The algorithms will reduce the total time spent flying long-distance routes by optimizing airplane trajectory in a three-dimensional wind environment constrained by the different time of arrival requirements. This research work focuses on utilizing MATLAB graphical functionality as well as modularity as an analytical tool. MATLAB simulation, as well as visualization capabilities, are hugely beneficial in both engineering education as well as research. MATLAB has been used to create a test-bed to visually depict mission planning work to provide a visible representation of flight routes and their variability.
