This study analyses previous piracy related incidents in terms of the major contributing factors. Discussions are given on the guidelines developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to minimize the risk to ships exposed to attacks from pirates. The initiatives taken to suppress piracy, armed robbery and other maritime crimes are highlighted. The UK's National Strategy for Maritime Security is described in terms of its objectives and methodology. Further recommendations on how maritime security and piracy may be best addressed have been developed and outlined in the conclusions.
