Advancements in compound semiconductor materials technology has resulted in III-phosphide and III-nitride based light-emitting diodes with luminous efficiencies exceeding that of conventional light sources throughout the visible-spectrum wavelength regime. In addition to new applications in illumination, the ability to transform energy directly into (the desired) relatively narrow-band emission spectra has significant ramifications for display technologies.
