Random valued impulse noise is the most frequently cause of distortion in natural images. Detection of random valued impulse noise is a little difficult because of its random nature. It is an active area of research and a large number of improvements have been proposed till date. Median filter based techniques are very effective in removal of random valued impulse noise from natural images. Main factors behind the popularity of median filter based technique are simple implementation and significant noise reduction. Lots of improvement in median filter is proposed to tradeoff between image quality and system complexity. This paper presents a review of most significant median filter based image denoising techniques.
