Two types of PM linear machines (PMLMs) are designed according to application requirements of a ropeless elevator, one with end overlapping winding and the other with end non-overlapping winding. Based on FEM, these two PMLMs are calculated and optimized. The influence of air gap length error is also discussed. By comparing their thrust forces and thrust ripples, it is proven the latter one has better driving performance with controller at normal working conditions, while the one with end overlapping winding only has better performance at energy consumption braking condition. After that, the suitable PMLM for ropeless elevator is manufactured and measured. Based on the prototype, a novel modular structure with segmented armatures is proposed, which can not only simplify manufacture process, but also effectively decrease the thrust ripple. The effect of reducing thrust ripple is validated by a small prototype measurement.
