We present the realization of single-lobe surface-emitting devices, which instead of using a chirped grating employ a simpler technique: strongly asymmetric coating of cleaved mirror facets. It is found that for high duty-cycle (70%) grating devices single-lobe emission occurs over a wide range of grating phase values at the high reflectivity facet: 10/spl deg/-80/spl deg/. Furthermore, it is found that placing phase shifts around n/2 in the center of the grating provides orthonormal, single-lobe operation with nearly uniform near-field intensity profiles.
