A phosphor-free ZnSe-based high-brightness white LED operating at very low voltages is demonstrated. The optical output power and operating voltage of a typical device at a forward current of 20 mA is 6.8 mW and 2.5 V, respectively. The luminous efficacy estimated from these results is 28 lm/W, which exceeds the incandescent lamp.
