In this presentation, we discuss optical technologies that will enable wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) to move into the metropolitan area networks (MAN), and their associated design trade-offs. Rapid growth of demand in data services is pushing WDM technologies from the long-haul (LH) to MAN, and a new lower-cost form of WDM technology is emerging.
