With the advent of Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) it is possible to disseminate the traffic information is collected in real time from mobile devices present in the vehicles, especially when vehicles are moving in urban areas. However, in these areas the occurrence of simultaneous transmissions, collisions and contention in the wireless channel can be frequent, making the scalability support one of the main challenges of traffic systems in VANETs. In this paper it is proposed a new data aggregation schema that enables traffic information systems to scale in the context of urban VANETs. The proposed scheme was evaluated on a scenario based in a real city map (Manhattan), and compared to SOTIS and RW schemes, resulting in a significant reduction in the amount of generated messages and in the notification time.
