This work introduces a novel decoupling technique which employs the theory of coupled characteristic modes for a two element microstrip array. The key idea is to optimize the shape of the decoupling structure using the eigenvalues of the coupled array which can be computed with no prior knowledge of the excitation arrangement. A template example with parasitic isolating strip has been verified with full-wave simulation. The proposed method can find future application in the multi-antenna system for any desired frequency of interest.
