Addresses some key issues in integrated waveguide demultiplexer technology including insertion loss, inter-channel crosstalk, and polarization sensitivity and compares and contrasts the two different contenders, etched diffraction grating and arrayed waveguide demultiplexers. Theoretical and experimental results of the effects of grating patterning defects on crosstalk are presented, as well as a novel, easy-to-make, integrated polarization compensator.
