This paper describes the functionality involved in implementing concepts for a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) over Unified Diagnostic Services (UDS)[1] on a Controller Area Network (CAN)[2] (SOAoUDSoCAN) bus as a simple, low-cost Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) framework. This is accomplished by leveraging a subset of the more general services defined in ISO 14229, and communication methods such as request/response from ISO 15765 (along with its protocol features like transport protocol); all of which are already implemented in most Electronic Control Units (ECUs) given the popularity of the UDS standard in most vehicles.
