In this paper, we present a new codebook design motivated by statistical properties of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels generated by 3GPP TR 38.901, a specification document targeted for 5G new radio (NR). The beamforming vectors of the proposed codebook are chosen from discrete Fourier transform (DFT) beams to cover a variable range of angular channel distributions, while maintaining the double codebook structure composed of long-term and short-term beam groups. Effectiveness of the codevector selection is visualized in a multi-dimensional index space where the search result as well as standard codevectors are indicated for comparison. The proposed codebook is shown to exhibit a significant performance gain over different carrier frequency ranges and channel types.
