A simple beam size converter using a micro GRIN slab tip with a hemi-cylindrical endface for highly coupling between single-mode fibers and small-core waveguides is presented. Formulas for design are given in closed forms. It has been confirmed experimentally that such micro slab tip is capable of converting the spot radius of a single-mode fiber into the size smaller than the wavelength of 1.55 /spl mu/m.
