In this paper, a nonlinear speed control scheme based on the sliding mode control (SMC) for variable speed operations of diesel engine-generator (EG) sets is proposed. At first, the mathematical model representing the relation among engine speed, governor current and mechanical torque is derived. Then, the SMC-based speed controller for EG is designed. The proposed method can provide the fast reference tracking performance with a zero steady-state error. Due to the variable speed operation of EG, the fuel consumption is reduced by 11% compared with the constant speed operation. The validity of the proposed control method has been verified by simulation results.
