Summary form only given. In July 2001, NASA will launch a spaceborne laser altimeter into a near-polar, near-circular orbit to measure changes in polar ice-sheet topography, as well as along-track land and ocean topography and atmospheric characteristics. Altimetry measurements will be made using a 1064-nm pulse and atmospheric measurements will use a 532-nm pulse.
