This paper presents results on comparing SRS properties of tungstate and molybdate crystals under excitation with nano- and picosecond laser pulses. In the steady state case with nano and subnanosecond pump pulses, BaWO/sub 4/ crystal exhibit one of the highest Raman gain close to that in Ba(NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/ crystal. For SRS under excitation with 15 ps pump pulses PbWO/sub 4/ and PbMoO/sub 4/ Raman crystals were found to be most efficient for SRS.
