We have developed a model for singly-resonant-optical-parametric-oscillators (SROPOs) which can be applied to the optimization of pulses generated in SROPOs, or in the beams obtained in CW or quasi-CW pumped SROPOs. In addition to the production of temporal solitons we will present comparisons between the 1D transverse model and 1D and 2D infinite dimensional map models describing accurately SROPOs. We will show that the inclusion of a third order nonlinear element and control of the spatial and temporal profiles of the pump laser are essential in establishing the formation of stable soliton like beams in SROPOs. As a result we established simple criteria for the formation of such soliton pulses and beams of practical optical parametric oscillators.
