Self-phase modulation induced spectral broadening has been observed for ultrashort pulses propagating through Ta/sub 2/O/sub 5/ rib waveguide. The associated nonlinear refractive index was conservatively estimated to be 7.23 /spl times/ 10/sup -19/ m/sup 2//W, which is higher by one order of magnitude than silica glass.
