Phase coded waveforms have proven useful for improving range and Doppler resolution in radar systems. In particular, Costas and MCPC type waveforms have been shown to be particularly useful. For MCPC waveforms, the matched filter response of the complementary sets have an ideal periodic autocorrelation function and adding the autocorrelation responses of all cyclically shifted versions of sequences with an ideal periodic autocorrelation response yields a response with low sidelobes. However, the waveforms do not have uniformly low autocorrelation sidelobes. Here, a phase coded radar waveform having variable carrier bandwidths is presented as an alternative. The waveform is compared to the MCPC waveforms for a case having similar overall bandwidth. The variable subband bandwidth waveforms shows more uniform sidelobes in its autocorrelation than the MCPC waveform.
