The very soul of urban transport lies in the economic and social fabric of modern cities, but growing challenges brought by fast-paced urbanization, private vehicle ownership as well as congestion on the roads emerge. Traditional methods of traffic management, punitive as they have been, failed in terms of the fundamental causes of traffic violation and congestion. This research proposes an RFID-based Traffic Reward System that will encourage most drivers to comply with traffic laws and behave responsibly on the road. The system will achieve this goal through real-time monitoring of vehicle movements at strategic checkpoints using RFID technology and reward the drivers for complying with speed limits, traffic signals, and lane discipline. It is a user-friendly mobile application that gives access to the system and users can receive real-time updates about how they are doing with the system, reward points, and incentives that their business partners have available. This hybrid methodology will be integrating RFID infrastructure, mobile technologies, behavioral psychology, and stakeholder collaboration to give an achievable, sustainable solution for improved urban traffic management. This system considers the use of positive reinforcement as opposed to repressive measures towards crime as it attempts to curtail traffic congestion rates, improve the safety of the roads and reduce environmental degradation. As such, research methodology would encompass carrying out in-depth literature review, detailed design systems, pilot testing and iteration improvement which ensures technical feasibility, besides eliciting user acceptance. The pilot will be used to establish the performance indicators to assess compliance rates, improved flow of traffic, and satisfaction of the user. It will look forward to visualizing the paradigm shift in the management of traffic to ensure an ecosystem that works for and benefits the driver, business, and traffic authority in the delivery of smarter, more efficient urban transportation systems.
