The specification and selection of rolling stock for high-speed passenger trains to operate on nonelectrified lines involves a number of critical issues. These issues include economic factors, physical features, safety aspects, operating features and technical options, all of which are described and discussed in detail. The development of a performance specification and a procedure for evaluating proposals from suppliers are given in conclusion.
