License plate localization is the key process in vehicle plate recognition, but it is very difficult to achieve. Using the texture feature of a license plate, an adaptive extraction algorithm for edge detection based on mathematical morphology and information entropy is presented in this paper. The edge is extracted from different directions, and the license plate is located by projection. The experiment showed that proposed positioning method was effective for noisy images, and could accurately position the plate region regardless the interference and complex background of a vehicle image; also the algorithm had good robustness.
