The paper describes an automated measurement system for mechanical loss characterization of wires at cryogenic temperature. The important role of these measurements for the design of the Kamioka Gravitational Wave Detector (KAGRA) is highlighted. The experimental setup used to perform the measurements are presented and discussed. Furthermore, preliminary results obtained for a tungsten wire in term of quality factor are reported.
