Mesh networks based on grooming optical cross connects (OXC) are being implemented by carriers with next generation optical transmission systems. The latter provide ultra-long haul (ULH) functionality together with optical add-drop multiplexers (OADM) and optical switches (OS) to allow traffic to transit through nodes cost effectively and switch in the WDM domain.
