In the future, tactical fighters will be required to operate from austere bases in third world mission scenarios, away from CONUS and alternate basing. Thus, these aircraft must be able to perform multi-role missions with limited sparing capabilities and very fast turn-around time for maintenance. Since an aircraft's engines and airframe are fixed, modular avionics is the most affordable and flexible method of enhancing the functionality of the aircraft for these multi-role missions. To support avionics operating under these conditions, an ultrareliable, flexible and scalable digital processing capability is required.<>
