In this paper we describe recent advances in these areas that have enabled us to demonstrate a zinc-germanium-phosphide (ZnGeP/sub 2/) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) driven by a diode pumped holmium laser, capable of multi-watt average power levels in both the near and mid-IR; repetition rates to tens of KHz; and OPO conversion efficiencies approaching 50% (input-to-output) and 70% (slope).<>
