By combining one of the oxygen-sensitive membranes with a porous layer containing immobilized (innocuous) bacteria, we have developed an on-line biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) fiberoptic sensor that correlates with the BOD/sub 5/ parameter. The Optosen analytical signal (luminescence phase shift) and the corresponding calibration plots are measured by continuously feeding glucose/glutamic acid (GGA) BOD standard solutions through a flowthrough sample cell where the optode is placed.
