Recent developments in the fabrication and light emission control of photonic crystals are described. Future photonic crystal studies promise the development of higher quality and more reliable devices with the aid of nanotechnology. In particular, 2D photonic crystal slab, in combination with Si LSI technology will proceed with an all-optical main part, but with electronic-driven control. Sensing applications, memory, single photon emitters, and other new application areas will also be developed since extremely high Q nanocavities has already been achieved. In the case of 3D photonic crystals, the fabrication technology will develop continuously and an ultimate control of photons will be demonstrated.
