Aiming at the issue that the major characteristics of variable flux memory machine (VFMM) are intercoupling, this article proposes a multiobjective hierarchical (MOH) optimization method with decoupling capability. The proposed method reduces the optimization dimension through comprehensive sensitivity analysis in the initial stage. The intercoupling optimization objectives are then divided into two different optimization levels to achieve decoupling, in which the genetic algorithm is employed. Level I optimization refines the ranges of structural parameters, which are highly correlated with flux regulation (FR) capability, thus ensuring that the next-level optimization has a population with a wide FR range. Level II optimization achieves the objectives of high torque and excellent on-load demagnetization withstand (OLDW) capability, etc. Subsequently, the proposed optimization method is applied to design a hybrid-magnetic-circuit (HMC) VFMM through the established multimode field-circuit (MMFC) coupled model. The electromagnetic characteristics of the machine before and after optimization are compared by using the finite element (FE) method, verifying the superiority and feasibility of the proposed method. Finally, the correctness of the FE analysis is validated by experimental measurements on a prototype.
