Error concealment with good restored video quality and low computational cost is significantly required for video streams transmitted in error-prone channels, especially for real-time applications. A fast and efficient spatial error concealment algorithm is proposed for intra-frames in the decoding phase, which utilizes a new matching criterion and avoids computational intensive tasks, such as edge detection and motion estimation. Moreover, this algorithm is capable of representing main edges in the image in light of the consistency with the spatial neighboring information. Experimental results indicate the proposed algorithm can attain well restored quality of intra-frames both subjectively and objectively. Meanwhile, the computational cost of the proposed algorithm can be significantly reduced, compared to temporal error concealment method, yet the restored quality is subjectively almost the same.
