Summary form only given. High power semiconductor lasers-both diffraction-limited and high-brightness multimode have steadily increased in power, brightness, and wavelength range over the 1990s. In the past few years, advances in device design such as flared amplifiers, curved-and angled-grating cavities, and advances in microoptical beam correction have led to order of magnitude improvements in brightness and enabled new applications in displays, fiber communications, and solid-state laser pumping. This talk will address these recent device enhancements and the physical mechanisms that have been overcome and remain to be overcome in increasing the performance of high-brightness laser diodes.
