We demonstrate that 2-dimensional photonic crystals can delineate a coherent VCSEL array, with individual defects (the absence of PhC holes) creating the lasing elements. Far field measurements indicate that controlling the coupling can be achieved by locally modifying the hole diameter in the photonic crystal array between the defects to be coupled.
