40 Gbit/s-based transoceanic transmission has been achieved by introducing various kinds of technologies to suppress the nonlinear effects in the transmission fiber, including finer dispersion management, distributed Raman amplification, modified modulation format and powerful FEC codes. To enhance the practicality and commercial viability of 40 Gbit/s-based transoceanic systems, further advances in key technologies are expected.
