This paper presents six different designs of the permanent magnet transverse-flux linear motor applied to an electromagnetic train. The initial design of the motor was modified to improve its magnetic characteristics. Changing the structure of magnetic rails, adding the additional magnetic poles, and modifying the shapes of PMs improved the performance of the machine. The final design demonstrated 5 times lower cogging force at no decrease of the total energy. The advantages of using the proposed motor for an electromagnetic train are discussed in the paper.
