The Current Differential Relay (CDR) detects fault within a transmission line using current data from both ends. Failure of the CDR to accurately detect faults, especially during heavy loading conditions, can lead to severe disturbances and economic losses. With the advent of advanced communication systems, data collection at a central location from an interconnected network allows for improved control and energy management. However, this interconnections in the grid also increases the risk of cyber threats, posing significant challenges to grid security. Cyberattacks on CDRs can lead to their maloperation, resulting in severe grid losses. Detecting and mitigating such cyber threats is thus critical. This paper proposes a novel method to prevent CDR maloperation due to cyberattacks using synchronized data from phasor measurement units (PMUs). The Wide Area Measurement System (WAMS) records disturbances, and data from dedicated PMUs are analyzed to identify whether the relay operation is due to fault or a cyberattack. Since attacks may not impact all buses simultaneously, using data from a group of dedicated PMUs, actual events can be identified. Our method employs the Exponential Moving Average (EMA) of voltage data collected from PMUs surrounding the CDR to detect and prevent false data injection attacks. Simulation results from the modified IEEE 14-bus distribution system in MATLAB/SIMULINK 2023a demonstrate that the proposed method effectively detects false data injection cases, thereby enhancing the reliability and security of the power grid.
