This paper presents the goals of the German TEMPUS research project in and around the city of Munich and describes the test field that is being created as part of it. The project will test and evaluate the impact of connected and automated driving in urban and rural environments. For this purpose, a cross-area test field, which includes inner-city roads as well as rural roads and freeways, was defined and equipped with infrastructure elements for communication with vehicles and surveyed as a 3D OpenDrive map. The research takes a holistic approach to testing the impact of connected and automated driving of private vehicles, public transport vehicles, and urban logistics, as well as their effect on traffic culture (i.e. societal aspects of transport) and future mobility possibilities. Based on the findings of the field tests, a microscopic traffic simulation is created to extrapolate and validate the effects of a more widespread introduction of the investigated technologies. Furthermore, managed lanes and lane-free traffic will be researched for a potential application in the Munich area. Overall, this paper discusses the TEMPUS research project and presents an outlook on the research results that will be produced in the coming years.
