Summary form only given. Long period fiber gratings have been used in a variety of applications such as gain equalization filters for optical amplifiers, band rejection filters and sensors for temperature and strain. Among these applications, gain equalization is the most demanding and interesting because of the impact of broadband gain-flattened EDFA have on next generation DWDM communications systems. I review the recent advances in long period fiber gratings including new fabrication techniques and improved temperature sensitivity.
