Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) is considered as a potential candidate in MVDC systems for All-Electric Ships (AES). Despite the fact that MMC is superior in certain capabilities, it is vital to evaluate the tradeoffs of determining parameters and structural configuration utilizing design tools. This paper focuses on developing a design tool which aids in estimating the size of the MMC converter for shipboard MVDC systems. Through the application of an appropriate design methodology converter design tool is implemented, tested and verified. The outcome of the work produces scaling laws which are anticipated to aid Smart Ship Systems Design (S3D) for early-stage design of AES.
