A strategy for the inverter voltage control during the overmodulation operation is presented to practically use for the traction motor in electric vehicles. This strategy prevents performance degradation of current control by linearizing the modified voltage reference by the overmodulation method. In addition, it facilitates the seamless transition to 6-step operation while maintaining the reasonably low total harmonic distortion. Consequently, vibration and acoustic noise associated with overmodulation are reduced, and the discomfort of passengers is mitigated in electric vehicles. The effectiveness of proposed strategy is verified through simulation tests.
