In this paper, we introduce the concept of discrete solitons in arrays of coupled optical waveguides and discuss the dynamics of these structures for various input conditions. We also concentrate on the field evolution around coupled nonlinear defects embedded in a photonic crystal and on the influence of dissipation on the dynamics and the switching behaviour of discrete solitons excited in these structures.
