In this paper, the externally modulated (EM) and directly modulated (DM) 80-channel AM-VSB video EDFA-repeatered systems using band-split and WDM techniques for CATV long-span supertrunking application are investigated and compared. We find that similarly high CNR with CSO/CTB values after 110 km of conventional single mode fibre (SMF) can be achieved for both such systems. Furthermore, the DM one is more simple and cost-effective than the EM one.
