The interaction of controlled few-cycle light fields with atoms allows the reproducible generation of isolated sub-fs electron and X-ray photon wavepackets. These tools can be used to record atomic excitation and relaxation processes in the time domain with a resolution within the Bohr orbit time (/spl sim/ 150 as).
